Is My Toddler Getting Enough Protein?

My latest Nutrition Concern has been about PROTEIN. Leo is an active 26 month old toddler. He eats plenty of solids mainly Whole Gains,
Vegetables, Fruits and Dairy. He also nurses 3 times a day for 10 minutes.
We don't eat meat very often (once a week) and when we do he doesn't want to try it. So his meat and egg intake is close to none.
Since we always hear that Protein is in meat and is essential for proper childhood growth and development I started to be concerned.
So I looked for more information in "The Family Nutrition Book" by Doctor Sears and a couple of websites to find out the Magic Number.

How Much Protein Does A Toddler Need?
The magic number for Toddlers is:
0.6 grams of protein per body weight per day.

Well, my little guy weighs 24 pounds so he needs 14.4 grams of protein per day. Great!! Ofcourse This number doesn't tell me much.
So my 1st reflex was to rush to my fridge to check the labels of the 2 main foods my son eats everyday: Organic Whole Milk and Organic Whole Milk Yogurt. And this
was reassuring because Whole Milk has 8g of protein per cup and Leo drinks at least 3/4 cup per day. That is already 6g. And in Whole Milk Yogurt there is 12g of
protein per cup and Leo eats at least 1/2 cup per day. That is another 6g. So I know that just with these two things Leo gets 12g of proteins per day.
Nice!! I am pretty sure he is getting at least 2.4g of proteins somewhere in his other food, Isn't he?

So what are the Protein Rich Foods beside meat, eggs and fish?
The book says: eating whole grains in combination with legumes like rice and beans, organic soy, cottage cheese, peanut butter, nuts, sunflowers seeds, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread.
Also when you look in some cooking books you can find a chart with the nutrition content of foods. So I learned that: barley, rye, almonds, cashews,
walnuts, peas, tofu and quinoa have good amounts of protein. I could also see that the best protein rich bean is black eyed peas and the best meat for protein content is turkey,
goose and pork.

Anyway now I am reassured. I see that it is easy to have plenty of protein for a two year old, even one that doesn't eat much meat. One thing we don't
have to worry about with protein is that it does not break down during the cooking process like some vitamins. Next I'd like to see if Leo is getting enough Omega3's, vitamins, oils and water...I'll keep you
posted on what I find. I want to make sure that my baby grows heathly and smart and I think this has a lot to do with what we eat.
So Eat Well, Feel Good!!

When Leo ask for milk and it is not the right time for me I tell him:
"Maman is empty. It hurts Maman"
And he understands. Most of the time I say that only when it is true. Every morning he has a little drink. But after 5 or 10 minutes it hurts me because it is empty. So I tell him. He stops and we go dowstairs to have breakfast.
